The idea of a fresh start can be exciting, but it can also be daunting. Before you dive in head first, it is important to ask yourself some key questions to make sure you're ready for a fresh start. In this blog post, we will discuss what a “fresh start” is, what you need to consider before embarking on a fresh start, and ask yourself six key questions to make sure you're ready for it. So, if you're ready to take the plunge, let's get started!
What is a “Fresh Start”?
A fresh start can mean many things to many people. It is a chance to start over and make a change in your life. It can be anything from changing jobs, moving to a new city, starting a new relationship, or going back to school. A fresh start is a great opportunity to take risks and try something new. It can be scary and exciting at the same time, but if you make sure you are prepared, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
A fresh start is also the chance to give yourself a clean slate. Forgive yourself for not meeting old goals or not following through on things. A fresh start gives you the chance to make changes without the weight of past failures dragging you down.
What Do You Need to Consider Before Taking a Fresh Start?
Before taking a fresh start, there are a few important things to consider. First, you need to make sure that the fresh start you are considering is something that you really want to do. It is important to think through all the possible outcomes and make sure that the path you are taking is something you are truly passionate about. It is also important to make sure that you are prepared for the changes that will come with a fresh start. This includes making sure that you have enough resources and support to make it a successful transition.
As a side note to my ADHD friends: you know you follow all the shiny new things. It’s the way your brain works. And it’s not a bad thing. But when you hop from one new thing to another, you might feel bad because you might not get around to actually finishing anything. Or you do something and end up regretting it.
Whenever my daughter wants something that's a big change—I'm not talking about starting yet another new hobby, but longer lasting things—I tell her to give it two weeks. If she still really wants it, then we can talk. At least 4 or 5 times when she was younger, she asked to get her ears pierced. We talked about it each time, but I made her wait 2 weeks. She ended up not getting her ears pierced until she was 15.
Forcing yourself to stop and really consider something will help you make the best choices for you.
Ask Yourself These Questions to Make Sure You're Ready for a Fresh Start
Before taking a fresh start, it is important to ask yourself some key questions to make sure you're ready. Here are six questions to help you make sure you're in the right mindset and prepared for a fresh start.
Do I Have a Clear Vision for My Next Step?
Having a clear vision of what you want to accomplish is essential to a successful fresh start. You need to have a plan for where you want to go and what you want to do. Take some time to consider your goals and objectives and make sure you have a clear vision for your next step.
Often, we think we’re making real changes to our lives, but we’re just putting lipstick on a pig. It’s the same life, just dressed up a little. If you want actual change, you need to understand what you’re looking for. It has to be more than “I’m tired of my current life. I need something different.” You need to figure out what the different is.
Have I Set My Goals Properly?
Once you know what you want in your life, you need to set goals. Setting the right goals is essential for a successful fresh start. Take some time to consider what your goals are and make sure that they are realistic and achievable. Think about what you want to accomplish and make sure that your goals are specific and measurable. This might sound familiar, as it is the steps for SMART goals. SMART goals give you the path to success.
Am I Willing to Take Risks?
Taking a fresh start is all about taking risks. You will need to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Consider what risks you are willing to take and make sure that you are prepared to face any challenges that come your way. In order for a fresh start to work, you need to make a commitment to change. For some of you, commitment is hard. Be realistic with yourself. Maybe now isn’t the right time for you to enact big changes.
For my friends with anxiety, sometimes the fear of change or taking a risk is too much for you. This is why you need to consider how far outside your comfort zone you’re willing to go. It’s good to stretch yourself, but you don’t want to go too far too fast.
Am I Prepared to Make Sacrifices?
Making a fresh start can require making some sacrifices. You may need to make some changes in your life in order to achieve your goals. Consider what sacrifices you are willing to make and make sure that they are ones that you are comfortable with. A new beginning means something has to end. While you won’t be abandoning everything in your life, you should be aware of what you are leaving behind.
For example, when I decided I wanted to write novel, I was a stay-at-home mom with small kids. I only wrote while my kids were at sports and activities and then at night when they went to bed, I typed up what I had written. In order for me to do that, I had to give up TV time. I happen to love watching TV. I didn’t cut it out completely but giving up a few hours a week helped me find the time to write a book.
Do I Have Enough Self-Confidence?
Having enough self-confidence is essential when taking a fresh start. You will need to trust yourself and your decisions in order to make a successful transition. Make sure that you have enough self-confidence to tackle any obstacles that come your way. You need to believe in yourself and your ability to stick to your commitment and your strategy. Others might not be supportive, so you will rely on your own confidence.
If you do not have a great support system, this can be really hard. Having people routinely tell you that you can’t do something or that you’ll fail because that’s the way you are, can be a hit to your confidence. Ignore the people who aren’t actively supportive. Tune out the negative voices (especially the one in your own head), and keep moving forward.
Do I Have a Plan for Strategic Living?
Living strategically is an important part of taking a fresh start. You need to have a plan for how you will manage your time, money, and energy in order to achieve your goals. It’s important to note that you have to plan for change. Things don’t always go the way we want and when something happens and doesn’t fit our life plan, it can put you in a tailspin. Accept that change will happen. Figure out ways you can deal with it so your strategic plan isn’t derailed.
Creating a fresh start can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but it is important to make sure that you are prepared before you take the plunge. With the right mindset and preparation, you can make your fresh start a successful one. Get ready to take the plunge and make a fresh start today!
