The holiday chaos can have a significant impact on our ability to manage our time and energy effectively. The combination of social engagements, family obligations, and work-related demands can quickly lead to feelings of stress and overwhelm. 

This can take a toll on our executive function skills, which are crucial for planning, organizing, and managing our time. When we're feeling overwhelmed, our ability to prioritize tasks and make decisions may be compromised, making it even more challenging to navigate the holiday hustle.

When we're feeling overwhelmed, it can be challenging to maintain focus and concentrate on important tasks. Additionally, our ability to regulate our emotions and manage our impulses may be compromised, leading to increased feelings of stress and anxiety.

For neurodivergent people, the impact of holiday stress on executive function skills may be even more pronounced. Differences in processing information, managing time, and regulating emotions can create additional barriers to effectively navigating the holiday chaos. 

For example, if you typically struggle to keep track of appointments and meetings, this challenge will be exacerbated by adding numerous additional events to your schedule. If you’re someone who easily gets overstimulated by being around a lot of people, the holidays increase the chances of this happening (repeatedly).

Recognizing the impact of holiday stress on executive function skills is an important first step in effectively managing time and energy during this busy time. By acknowledging the potential challenges that arise during the holiday season, we can proactively implement strategies to support our executive function skills and maintain a sense of control over our time and energy.

Time Management Hacks for Preserving Energy

Managing time and energy during the holiday hustle requires strategic planning. By implementing practical strategies to preserve energy, you can navigate the holiday chaos with greater ease and maintain a sense of well-being. Here are some time management hacks to help you preserve energy during the holiday season:

Prioritize Your Commitments

During the holiday season, it's common to feel overwhelmed by a multitude of social engagements, work-related demands, and family obligations. To preserve your energy, prioritize your commitments based on their importance and impact. 

You might think that all engagements are important or even something you “have” to do. But you’re no longer a child and you can make your choices. 

Identify the events and tasks that align with your values and bring you joy. Consider scaling back on those that may drain your energy. If you dread going to the company party, why go? What are the repercussions? If there are none, skip it. If there’s a good reason to go – networking, facetime with bosses when you’re working toward a promotion, picking up a bonus check – go with a plan. Arrive early and leave early. Or arrive late so you don’t have to worry about people asking you to stay. 

Create a Realistic Schedule

Setting realistic expectations for your time and energy is key to maintaining a sense of balance during the holiday hustle. Avoid overcommitting yourself and instead create a realistic schedule that allows for adequate rest and relaxation. 

This starts with being honest with yourself. I know that even if I’m at a party and am enjoying myself, I’m going to get to the point where I’ve “peopled” enough. I need to be alone. Often, that means the next day (or even the next few days) I don’t want to socialize. Knowing that about myself means that I won’t schedule events too close together.

By establishing boundaries and allocating time for self-care, you can prevent burnout and preserve your energy for the activities that matter most to you.

Delegate and Collaborate

Don't be afraid to delegate tasks and collaborate with others to lighten your load during the holiday season. Whether it's sharing responsibilities with family members, coworkers, or friends, leveraging support can help you conserve energy and reduce the sense of overwhelm. 

Even if you’re hosting a party or a meal, that doesn’t mean you have to do it all alone. It’s okay to ask others to bring dishes or drinks. Have the groceries delivered instead of going to the store. Ask your siblings to come early to help clean. 

By working together with others, you can create a more harmonious and balanced holiday experience for everyone involved.

Implementing these time management hacks can help you preserve energy and approach the holiday season with a greater sense of ease and control.

In order for visual aids to work, however, they need to be in a place where you’ll actually see them. If you’re on your phone a lot, consider making your schedule your home screen. Maybe post an extra calendar on your fridge or by the door where you leave the house for a final check for the day. Consider using color-coding or symbols to differentiate between various activities and priorities.

Break Tasks into Manageable Steps

Breaking down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps can make them more approachable and achievable. I always talk about breaking tasks down to keep away the overwhelm, but you really need to do this when you’re trying to tackle huge holiday projects. It can help mitigate the impact of executive dysfunction and facilitate a more structured and organized approach to completing tasks. 

By focusing on one step at a time, you can reduce feelings of overwhelm and enhance your productivity. Instead of looking at one huge list of people you need to shop for, group them – all the kids, all the men, co-workers. If even that feels too big, only do one person at a time.

If you’re hosting a holiday party and you can’t even figure out what the steps are, use to help you make a list of steps. It’s a free online tool that can break pretty much anything into steps. And if the step it gives you is too big, it will break it into substeps. 

Navigating Holiday Stress: Tips for Overcoming Overwhelm

By implementing targeted tips and techniques, you can navigate the holiday chaos with greater ease and embrace a balanced and sustainable holiday experience. Here are some tips for overcoming overwhelm and managing holiday stress:

Practice Mindfulness and Stress-Reduction Techniques

Engaging in mindfulness practices and stress-reduction techniques can help you manage holiday stress and overcome feelings of overwhelm. Whether it's through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga, incorporating these practices into your daily routine can promote a sense of calm and resilience. By cultivating a mindful approach, you can navigate the holiday hustle with greater ease and presence.

While it’s totally cool to implement these techniques when the overwhelm starts to hit, you might find it more beneficial to engage in them daily. Making them habit will make them easier to use and they will help keep you calmer overall.

Set Realistic Expectations and Boundaries

Setting realistic expectations and boundaries can prevent feelings of overwhelm during the holiday season. Be mindful of your limitations and recognize when to say no to additional commitments. By prioritizing your well-being and honoring your boundaries, you can maintain a sense of balance and avoid taking on more than you can comfortably manage.

As I mentioned above, be real with yourself and don’t try to convince yourself that this time something will be different. This goes for overcommitting yourself to engagements as well as exposing yourself to people who add stress to your life. While I’d love to say that you should create boundaries for these people and remove them from your life, I know that for some of you that’s not possible right now. You still need to respect yourself enough to create a boundary you can live with and keep your mental health intact.

Incorporate Self-Care into Holiday Time Management

Self-care is essential for maintaining a sense of well-being and resilience. Taking care of your physical, emotional, and mental health can help you navigate the holiday hustle with greater ease. Here are some ways to incorporate self-care into your holiday time management:

Prioritize Rest and Restoration

Amidst the flurry of holiday activities, it's important to prioritize rest and restoration. Allocate time for adequate sleep, relaxation, and rejuvenation to replenish your energy and maintain a sense of balance. 

Take a nap if you need one. Go hang out on your couch and read a book. Whether it's through engaging in calming activities, spending time in nature, or practicing self-care rituals, prioritize activities that nourish and replenish your well-being. Forgetting to take time out to recharge can have an exponential negative effect on us. Getting a little less sleep one night might not be a big deal, but multiple nights in a row and it’s a snowball effect.

Engage in Activities That Bring Joy

If you’re not having fun, why are you doing all these things? I get it – there are family obligations and stuff, but you need to balance out the “have to do’s” with the things you want to do.  

Whether it's pursuing creative hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or engaging in meaningful experiences, prioritize activities that uplift and inspire you. By creating moments of joy and connection, you can improve your overall well-being and resilience during the holiday season.

Practice Self-Compassion and Acceptance

During the holiday hustle, it's important to practice self-compassion and acceptance. Be gentle with yourself and acknowledge that it's okay to prioritize your well-being and set boundaries. Embrace a mindset of self-care and self-compassion, and recognize that taking care of yourself is essential for navigating the holiday chaos with grace and resilience.
