Benefits of practicing self-care
Self-care is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When you take the time to practice self-care, you reap a variety of benefits. These benefits include improved mental and physical health, increased self-esteem, improved relationships, and increased productivity.
Mental and physical health:
When you practice self-care, it can have a positive effect on both your mental and physical health. Taking the time to rest, relax, and take care of yourself can help reduce stress, which can have a positive impact on both your mental and physical health.
Self-esteem:
Practicing self-care can also boost your self-esteem. When you take the time to take care of yourself, it can help you feel better about yourself and your capabilities. This can help you become more confident in your abilities, which can be beneficial in both your personal and professional life.
Relationships:
Self-care can also help improve your relationships. When you take the time to take care of yourself, it can help you become more present and engaged in your relationships. This can help create stronger and more meaningful connections with those around you. As a parent, we almost always put our kids first. But you do them no good if you're stressed and completely burned out. Take care of you so you can take care of them.
Productivity:
Practicing self-care can also help boost your productivity. When you take the time to rest and relax, it can help you become more energized and motivated. This can help you get more done in a shorter amount of time and improve your overall productivity.
This ties directly to some of the biggest complaints I hear from people with executive dysfunction. They're afraid to take time for self-care because they “should” be doing other things. But if you don't take care of yourself, you won't be able to focus in order to use your executive function skills.
Overall, practicing self-care can have a positive effect on both your mental and physical health. It can also help boost your self-esteem, improve your relationships, and increase your productivity. That’s why it’s important to take the time to practice self-care and make it a part of your daily routine.
Creating a self-care routine
Creating a self-care routine is essential for practicing self-care in an effective and sustainable way. To create a self-care routine, use this guide to self-care to identify what type of activities you enjoy and what type of self-care activities you need. It’s also important to make sure that your self-care activities are achievable and realistic.
Identifying activities:
It’s important to identify activities that you enjoy and activities that you need. This can help make your self-care routine more enjoyable and more effective. For example, if you enjoy yoga, you could include yoga in your self-care routine. If you need to make sure you get enough rest, you could include a nightly bedtime routine in your self-care routine.
Making it achievable and realistic:
It’s also important to make sure that your self-care routine is achievable and realistic. This can help ensure that you actually stick to your self-care routine and get the most out of it. For example, if you’re a busy person, you might not have time for a two-hour yoga class every day. Instead, you could do a short yoga practice or a few stretches in the morning or evening. Or, you can join an online class that you can do on demand.
Once you’ve identified activities that you enjoy and need and made sure that they’re achievable and realistic, you can start creating your self-care routine. To create your self-care routine, it’s important to decide when and how often you’ll practice self-care and set reminders. This can help ensure that you actually stick to your self-care routine.

for parents
If you’re a parent, it can be difficult to find the time to practice self-care. That’s why it’s important to find self-care activities that you can do with your children. Here are some self-care ideas for parents:
- Go for a walk: Going for a walk can help reduce stress and can help you connect with your children. You can talk about their day or help them learn new things about the world around them while you enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.

- Go to the park: The park is an excellent place if you want some time to yourself. With any luck, there will be other kids at the park who can engage your children and you can sit on a bench and relax.
- Go to a museum: A hands-on museum is fabulous for kids. There are a ton of activities to keep them occupied. I always suggest going with a mom friend because then the job of making sure no one escapes is split between you.
- Go to the beach: I loved Fish Lake Fridays all summer long with my best friend and my kids when they were little. My friend and I would chat or read the books we brought along while the kids played in the sand and water. We had our kids trained that they couldn't go any deeper than chest level unless we were in the water with them (at least until they could actually swim), and there was always a lifeguard on duty, so it was fun.
- Do a craft project: If messes bother you, do a craft in the yard. Find something that the kids will enjoy and let them go to town. Make a mess! Have fun! Yes, you will have to clean it up later, but while they are crafting, you get some relaxation time, and they are not only happy, but are also wearing themselves out.
for nature lovers
If you’re a nature lover, it’s important to find self-care activities that you can do in nature. Here are some self-care ideas for nature lovers:
- Go for a hike: If you love being outdoors, map out some new trails to conquer in your area. Or revisit old favorites and look for new things on those trails
- Go for a bike ride: If you're lucky enough to live in a town with bike lanes, you can bike anywhere. Maybe one day a week you can bike to work or bike to the store for a few small items.
- Go camping: If you can get away for a weekend, camping is an excellent way for you to recharge. You're removed from civilization and the hustle and bustle and can focus on relaxing. On your trip, you can do some of the other ideas on this list.
- Go bird-watching: Looking for birds to identify can be like a treasure hunt. If you have kids, you can create a bird-watching journal and record what you find. In addition to seeing and learning about birds, you can also be soothed by the music they make.
- Go stargazing: Not much can beat lying on the ground and starting up into the black of the night sky and star gazing. It's peaceful and quiet and the sight isn't something you'll get in the city.
for workaholics
If you’re a workaholic, it’s important to find self-care activities that you can do while you’re at work. Here are some self-care ideas for workaholics:
- Take mini breaks: While you might not be comfortable taking time away, you can probably afford 5-minute breaks a few times a day. During those breaks, make sure the time is really yours—no phone, no computer, no work.
- Leave the office: Physically stepping away from work is an excellent way to take a break. I work from home and after sitting at my computer for a couple of hours, I go load the dishwasher or do some laundry. Yes, it’s not really self-care; however, taking care of those little tasks during the day gives me more time later that I can use for self-care. Mostly, it’s giving myself a mental break from the tasks at hand. When I go back, I'm more focused.
- Take a lunch: Don’t work through your lunch. It might make you the top star in the office, but it will eventually cost you. We are not designed to go nonstop. If you bring a lunch, simply find someplace else to eat instead of at your desk. It will remove the temptation of working.
- Take a nap: Again, this might freak you out, but I’m not suggesting a 2-hour nap. I love a power nap. When I was in college and worked nights, I would take a 15-20 minute nap before work pretty much every day. It’s a great way to recharge, and since it’s so short, it shouldn’t mess with your nighttime sleep schedule.
Taking the time to practice self-care doesn’t mean you have to go sit in a tub full of Epsom salts for two hours. That’s why it’s important to make time for self-care activities that work for you. You can create your own self-care routine by using this guide to self-care to identify what types of self-care activities you enjoy and what types of self-care activities you need.
