How to Step Away from Self-Limiting Beliefs
Self-limiting beliefs are those negative thoughts and feelings we all have from time to time. Small niggles can become big and debilitating if left unchecked for too long. If we don't step away from self-limiting beliefs, they can even stop us from reaching our potential in life, love, and work.

When it comes to crushing your self-limiting beliefs, it's easy to read and think about it. But doing those two things isn’t enough to help you overcome self-limiting beliefs. You must be willing to take action consistently if you want to break free from these thoughts. Fortunately, there are simple ways to step away from these self-limiting beliefs and reach your potential again.
Why do our self-limiting beliefs matter?
Every single one of us has self-limiting beliefs – the only question is how much they affect us. The more frequent these negative thoughts become, the harder it is to take action and achieve the things we want in life. With self-limiting beliefs, we are often our own biggest enemy and have the power to stop ourselves from trying to accomplish things before we even begin.
If you're experiencing a lot of self-doubt in your work, relationships, and life in general, you may want to look at the self-limiting beliefs that could be holding you back. They can be tough to spot sometimes, but it's worth digging deep and exploring where these negative thoughts could be coming from.
Step One: Challenge your fears
This is a tough one for many people. But you want to face the fears you have. For example, if you’re afraid of failure, you need to choose to do things you know you’ll fail at. If I’m afraid to lose, I need to challenge myself to do things that I’ll lose at. For example, I’m horrible at sports. If I play a game of basketball, I’ll lose. So, I should make myself play.
Make a list of things to do. If you fear rejection, ask a stranger to borrow $100, ask someone who you think is out of your league to take you to dinner, serenade people on the street…you get the idea.
Sure, these activities sound silly. However, they can help you overcome your fear of rejection. Fear is a part of life, but it doesn't have to control your life. The more you face your fears, the easier it gets. You might even find that you enjoy the process of facing your fears. It can be a fun, creative challenge.
Step Two: Be kind to yourself
One of the most important things to help you step away from self-limiting beliefs is to be kind to yourself. You don't need to be hard on yourself or feel guilty for letting these thoughts cross your mind. Humans are conditioned to think negatively from a very young age. It's essential to recognize that this is a learned behavior, and you don't have to continue this way.
You only have one life to live, and there’s no time like the present to be kind to yourself. Take some time out to connect with yourself and love yourself. This can be done through mindfulness, meditation, journaling, or any other self-love activity that works for you. Once you start being kind to yourself, you will notice that these negative thoughts will become less frequent and won't be as much of a problem as they once were.

Step Three: Know your triggers
The next step in being able to step away from your self-limiting beliefs is to know your triggers. This means figuring out where these negative thoughts are coming from and avoiding them as best you can.
Maybe these thoughts are triggered by a situation you often find yourself in, or perhaps they are triggered by something you've experienced in the past. Whatever the case, it’s important to know how to avoid these triggers as much as possible. If you can identify your triggers and avoid them, it'll be easier for you to overcome your negative self-limiting beliefs. You can then try and work on changing your thoughts to break the cycle.
Step Four: Change your perspective
The fourth step is to change your perspective. You need to realize that you have the power to change these thoughts into something positive. If you're feeling any of your usual negative thoughts, you can actively change them into something positive.
For example, let's say you're feeling negative about your ability to succeed at your job. You can change that thought into something more positive by saying, “I'm feeling nervous about this new task, but I'm going to do it anyway because I know I will be able to do it.”
This is a great way to turn negative thoughts into something positive that motivates and encourages you. If you can change how you think about your self-limiting beliefs and view them as something positive, you'll be able to overcome them much easier than if you stay trapped in the negative cycle.
Step Five: Take action
Finally, you need to be proud of the path you've chosen. You need to give yourself the confidence to step away from self-limiting beliefs by taking action.
You need to take action and do what you know you can do. No matter what negative thoughts you may be having, the best way to overcome them is by proving to yourself that you are capable of greatness. You must take action and ensure you are proud of your chosen path. Only then will you be able to step away from your self-limiting beliefs and finally reach your potential.
